Abstract: Hemangiosarcoma is a common and fatal canine cancer for which there are no effective treatments. HSA is caused by malignant blood vessels that spread easily from one organ to another. The most common site is the spleen. Dr.Helfand is examining therapeutic targets called receptor tyrosine kinase – RTK’s. These RTK’s act as “locks” on the outside of a cell. When they are unlocked, the cell grows. This research project is evaluating a new class of drugs that block RTK’s and may help inhibit the growth of malignant HSA cells. This new therapeutic approach shows promise in treating this deadly cancer.
