In 1997, a handful of Portuguese Water Dog Club of America, Inc. members joined together and dedicated their time, money, hard work, and hearts to building a healthier future for Portuguese Water Dogs. From their collaborative efforts, the Portuguese Water Dog Foundation (PWDF) was formed for the sole purpose of supporting breed specific health research.

In September 1998, the Portuguese Water Dog Foundation, Inc. was incorporated as a non-profit corporation and in February 2000, the PWDF was granted status by the IRS to act as a 501(c)(3) charitable organization. This tax status means all donations made to the Foundation are tax-deductible. All Officers and Board members of the Foundation serve as unpaid volunteers.

To help achieve its goals, the PWDF has received approval from the PWDCA, Inc. Board to communicate directly with PWDCA health committees. This direct contact will enable the Foundation to stay informed of newly identified health concerns and identify priorities in health research. As health concerns are targeted for donations and grants, specific fund drives will be undertaken.

The Portuguese Water Dog Foundation is dedicated to making a genuine impact on the future health of the breed through research and education specific to Portuguese Water Dogs.
