Final Summary Update End-Year 3 – Mapping Genetic Risk Factors for Canine Hip Dysplasia

Final summary update from the end of year 3 of research underway by Dr. Iivanainen of University of Helsinki to hopefully lead to a genetic test to aid breeders in controlling hip dysplasia. Research revealed 30 markers on eight different chromosomes that suggestively associated with the disease.

Shine On Progress Update Mid-Year 2

The vision “to create a world where we no longer fear cancer” drives the work of Dr. Jaime Modiano and his colleagues in the Animal Cancer Care and Research Program of the University of Minnesota College of Veterinary Medicine. The “Shine On” study represents a turning point in their efforts to achieve this vision, by finding a way to prevent hemangiosarcoma, an aggressive, malignant tumor of blood vessel cells, in dogs.

Microphthalmia and Delayed Growth Syndrome

February 1, 2017 – The Portuguese Water Dog Foundation is pleased to announce we have signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) along with the Portuguese Water Dog Club of America to collaborate with AKC CHF to jointly fund research at the University of Pennsylvania (UPENN) – Section of Medical Genetics, Pediatrics and Reproduction to better characterize the clinical disorder of syndromic microphthalmia and delayed growth seen in the PWD, commonly known in our breed as Puppy Eye Syndrome (PES).
