Rapid Response funding to determine risk of Portuguese Water Dogs with frequent exposure to freshwater developing canine schistosomiasis as a result of exposure to heterobilharzia americana (HA). The concern that the dogs of the PWD breed have at least as much risk as the general population of dogs based on other prevalence work across the country. However, there was reason to believe that there may be even more risk in the PWDs who participate in water trials as their practice and competitions are held in freshwater sources.
